A new bass fishing technique that should be tried is one that incorporates the Suwanee bass. Hailing from the great state of Georgia, the Suwanee River Bass is named for the location in which it is found. This is the only place in the world where you can hang into a bull-dog of a fish, the Suwanee bass. A distant cousin of the largemouth bass, the fish is found in the Suwanee river system of northern Florida and southern Georgia. This fish is special and the people of the Suwanee know this and will fight to protect their native fish. Think of this territorial vengeance as what the Irish feel about their auburn setters or the Mexicans and their Taco-Bell dogs. Downright nasty if you cross them. The fish will eat just about the same things that the largemouth will but with one variation, the bait must live in the Suwanee river.

The best way to catch a Suwanee bass is to use a top water plug as these fish love to strike high and run deep. Hold on as you hook into one of these prize-fighters. The Suwanee River is a wonderful water way full of Suwanee’s and largemouth as well. A great tactic for catching a Suwanee is to use a tube jig or even a live bait. The bait can be a shiner or shad but should be a bit smaller than the usual variety offered to the largemouth. the difference is the size of the bass that is locked into the river. the Suwanee bass is a smaller variety but it is pound for pound one of the best fighting fish this side of the Mississippi or the Suwanee. Top water plugs are great and very effective for the shallow running Suwanee bass so be careful of any overhanging tree branches are logs that love to snag those expensive lures.

One of the favorite times of the year to catch a bunch of Suwanee bass will raise a few eyebrows indeed: the winter. The fishermen appreciate the colder months of the season since the bass in the river get their bite on. It reminds one of a day of black crappie fishing in the foothills of South Carolina and is a great time to fish. The bass in the river are happy to gulp down a shiny nice lure any time of the year and the winter is just as good as any. The size of a Suwanee bass although a bit smaller in the winter still adds up to a great fighting fish. Winter is one of the best times to go fishing for Suwanee bass since the entire river system is a bit different than most in the United States. Head out to the river system of The Suwanee and start catching the big ones. The trip is going to be fantastic as the natural beauty of Georgia is hard to beat.
